Wedding like a backyard garden party in Brno
At the end of September, I had a wedding waiting for me at Dělnický dům in Brno. A small family wedding brought me here — the couple decided to do it like a garden party where they just casually get married. You know, just to make it official. The trip took me a whole 10 minutes, which was a very welcome change after all the other September weddings I had been shooting all over the country. I have to say, I didn’t really expect much from the place. Or well, I didn’t have any clear expectations. But it pleasantly surprised me! It’s really great there — a beautiful garden, nice indoor spaces, and basically everything you need for a wedding.
Wedding in Brno that broke all the rules
Right from the pre-wedding meeting, I knew two things — we’d totally click (nerds unite) and this wedding was gonna be epic. Lenka and Matěj decided to make their day non-traditional, authentic, and most importantly, totally their own. And that’s exactly how it should be! They ditched all that “we’re doing this because Auntie from three generations ago wants it,” threw traditions out the window, invited only the people they actually wanted there, and treated the day like a chill garden party. I was already floating on cloud nine, and then Matěj dropped the bomb that he’d walk down the aisle to the Pokémon theme song — I almost exploded. I love when you guys just own it!
Laughter, butts and coffee-dyed wedding dresses
The morning started, as weddings usually do, pretty chaotically, haha. Decorations were still being finalized, food was getting ready, and the couple was a bit nervous about running behind schedule. Which honestly never changes — it’s like an unwritten wedding law. So I tried to help them chill out a bit. Once everything was more or less ready, the groom went to get dressed so he could welcome the guests in full style. Getting dressed was a real blast. Like, a lot of fun. It was probably the smallest room I’ve ever shot wedding prep in, and yet somehow there were so many people packed in there that I still don’t get how we all fit — or how I even managed to take any decent photos, haha. The whole suit-up process was full of laughter, jokes, funny comments, and butts (but you had to be there). The bride, on the other hand, was getting ready pretty calmly and peacefully. All the ladies focused on hair and makeup, and it was quiet. When she put on her dress, I almost fainted. It was perfect. Simple, but definitely not boring. The color was spot on (long live coffee-dyed lace — seriously). And the cut? Divine! I was praising Lenka’s dress pretty much all day. But honestly, just look at her — didn’t she look like a fairy?
Garden ceremony and a giant tiramisu
The ceremony was beautiful. Simple, short, and authentic. After this — actually the only formal part of the day — the fun was totally free and easy. And fun! The guests kicked things off in a tattoo parlor full of wedding-themed temporary tattoos, beer was flowing nonstop, and later in the evening they really let loose on the dance floor. But the afternoon had an extra special treat — a huge tiramisu. At our pre-wedding meeting, Lenka said she loves tiramisu and that if she could, she’d have it as her wedding cake. I was totally on the same page because I loooove tiramisu too. I encouraged her that having tiramisu as a wedding cake shouldn’t be a problem nowadays and that if she wanted it, she should definitely go for it. So imagine how pleasantly surprised I was when, a few months later, I read in the wedding questionnaire that they were actually having a giant tiramisu! Even better — they took my recommendation and had it made by Kachna Dortuje, my go-to sugar dealer, and the only place I order cakes from. Nine kilos of coffee-flavored perfection! OBSESSED.
When you have your own personal sunshine
For the newlyweds’ photoshoot, we headed to a beautiful little chapel. The weather was perfect. We enjoyed the amazing views. And we had the newlyweds’ dog tagging along with us. What more could you ask for? The shoot was relaxed, full of laughter, no stiff posing — just the way I like it and what I always aim for. When we met for their pre-wedding shoot, it was about a thousand degrees outside. The sun was brutal, but it did one magical thing: it made Matěj’s hair literally glow. I joked to Lenka that day that it was pretty cool — that she basically had her own personal sun. And honestly, the more time I spent with them, the more true it felt. The way he looks at her, talks about her, and lights up around her… it’s something rare. Photographing couples who are so naturally connected makes my job feel effortless.
Why I love photographing nontraditional weddings
Days like this remind me why I love photographing non-traditional weddings so much. When couples break away from expectations and create something that’s truly their own, the whole day becomes more real. People relax. They connect. They enjoy the moment instead of following a script. Weddings are way too short to spend them doing what someone else expects. And the bonus? When you have a wedding that’s truly yours, chances are some people will get pissed off. Which actually helps with the guest list , because anyone who doesn’t vibe with your day simply doesn’t belong there. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
